While we were down in San Diego on vacation visiting family, during August, we witnessed a stirring and encouraging and beautiful evidence of the gracious hand of our God.
Most of you know that this summer my brother, Rick, was asked to leave (that’s putting it politely) the church he planted, in which he had ministered for 31 years! You can, perhaps, imagine the hurt and bewilderment.
However, the week in June that the thing was announced at the church, a few people from that church grew pretty upset. One woman arranged to rent, on a Sunday afternoon, an elementary school auditorium, asked Rick and Laurie to come and meet with folks who wanted to hear Rick’s perspective on what had happened.
Rick was agreeable. He did not know what was gonna happen. Did not know what God wanted to do with him....he still, however, felt God wanted him to teach God’s Word. So he went that Sunday afternoon....and was surprised when well over one hundred (!!) folks had gathered.
Rick shared briefly, then let folks ask questions. When he said he still felt God wanted him to teach the Word, somehow....PEOPLE CHEERED!! They were all over him:couldn’t we start a church?
And that’s exactly what happened. Someone arranged for the new church to begin meeting in the chapel of a private Christian school, others worked on various logistical details—childcare, bulletin, music, sound....and mid-JULY (!) the church began....about 175 attending. We got to attend services two Sundays in August. You would not believe the enthusiasm, the laughter, the smiles.
I asked Rick how he felt. He said, “Free. It’s wonderful to preach on Sunday to a congregation of folks who really wanna be there.”
They’ve named it “The Anchor Church,” taking the name from Hebrews 6:19—“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast....”
God, in His sovereign grace, has taken something harsh and awful, and produced light, freedom and joy. It has been something to see, I assure you....and very cool. What a God we serve.
In our sure and steadfast hope,
Jer.
